Feature Story Home Improvement Made Easy with the Dremel MultiMax
When Allison Hepworth was a little girl, she was often recruited to assist her father in what seemed to her to be every DIY project under the sun. From constructing a deck to rebuilding an entire car engine, Hepworth, her father and their trusty Dremel rotary tool were the perfect team to accomplish any project. Now, married with a home of her own, Hepworth’s passion for DIY projects has only grown. After starting her blog, House of Hepworths, in 2007, the support she received from fellow DIYers further encouraged her to tackle even more DIY projects. Four years later, she completes an average of 1012 projects per year, often borrowing her brotherinlaw’s Dremel 7700 7.2V Cordless MultiPro rotary tool for many of the project steps. “As I grew older, I developed a love and appreciation for building and fixing things myself,” Hepworth said. “I hate paying money to have someone else fix something for me, so if I am capable of doing it myself, I will. The skills I learned from my dad are invaluable.” Most recently, Hepworth added a cutlery caddy to her kitchen counter to help organize pots and pans. With the help of her 6300 Dremel MultiMax and the quickcutting MM440 ¾Inch Wood Flush Cut Blade, the project took just 20 minutes to complete. “The MultiMax was able to fit where no other tool could,” said Hepworth. “In addition to being the perfect size and fit for the project, it was also so easy to use. I’ve tried to think of another tool I could have used for this project, but I honestly can’t think of any.” The idea for the project came during an IKEA shopping trip when Hepworth noticed a pot rack mounted on the side of one of the kitchen cabinets in their show room. She felt the caddy’s easy organization was exactly what her kitchen needed. Since her cabinet molding interfered with the placement of the rack, she simply used her Dremel MultiMax to cut out a small square of the molding where she then screwed the caddy into place. Now, rather than having to dig through her collection of pots for the item she is looking for, she hangs her most used pots on her cutlery caddy for easy access. Now that she has her Dremel MultiMax, Hepworth says the list of home DIY projects she plans to complete has grown “as long as her arm.” From cutting tile in her kitchen to replacing her floors, Hepworth is gearing up for a busy summer season. To follow her on her future DIY endeavors, visit her blog at House of Hepworths. |

Getting to Know Your Tools Dremel Chuck Last month, all “The Martha Stewart Show” audience members were treated to a new Dremel Stylus™ complete with one of Martha Stewart’s favorite Dremel rotary tool accessories: the 4486 Dremel Chuck. The Dremel Chuck replaces the need for a collet and collet nut and is a great solution for projects that involve switching between multiple Dremel accessories with varying shank sizes. While the majority of Dremel accessories have a 1/8inch shank, there are a few exceptions: diamond wheel points, rubber polishing points, small engraving cutters and small drill bits. The Dremel Chuck is ideal for projects that involve these alternatively sized accessories, such as drilling a series of different size holes or engraving in glass or wood with varying detail. The Dremel Chuck allows users to quickly change out accessories without worrying about also changing the collet and collet nut for different shank sizes. When using the Dremel Chuck, be sure to insert accessories as far as possible into the tool before pulling back out only slightly for smoother operation. Because the Dremel Chuck is larger than a collet, it will not work with all Dremel attachments, such as the 565 Multipurpose Cutting Kit, 1453 Chain Saw Sharpening Attachment or PL400 Planer. We do not recommend using the Dremel Chuck with more aggressive applications like routing or using spiral cutting bits, and it should never be used to interface an attachment onto a tool. Still have questions? Contact the Dremel Experts at (800) 4373635 Monday through Friday between 7a.m. and 6p.m. CST, or send us an email. |
