Painting with chalkboard paint is a growing trend for the home. We love this simple idea from one of our favorite bloggers, Pauline Henderson of My Altered State. Pauline painted plywood with chalkboard paint and then used her Dremel Saw-Max™ to cut the plywood to create tags you can write on with chalk. The tags add a personalized touch as table place settings or as a door sign. You could also create unique nametags to mark Holiday gifts this season.

To create the tags, follow Pauline’s easy steps at DremelWeekends.com, and sign up to receive the weekly newsletter to your email for more project inspiration you can do in a weekend.

Fon Davis

For prop master and Dremel fan Fon Davis, hanging out on the set of a movie is just another day at work!

In celebration of Halloween, we caught up with Fon Davis, a loyal fan of Dremel tools and the visual effects and production expert behind some of the most beloved Sci-Fi film series of all time, Star Wars, The Matrix, Planet of the Apes and Transformers. We asked Fon about using Dremel tools in production and some of his fondest memories working in film.

Fon says, “Several of (my colleagues) at my studio, Fonco Creative Services, use the Dremel rotary tool almost every day. In our world the rotary tool is almost as common as a pen in an office environment. It’s not just any brand of rotary tool for us either. We often refer to our rotary tools as a “Dremel,” because it has been our standard for so many decades… I even had to make a computer model of a Dremel (tool) when helping illustrate on Mythbuster Grant Imahara’s book, ‘Kickin’ Bot: An Illustrated Guide to Building Combat Robots.’” Fon also says, “You’ll see me using the Dremel (tool) a lot in my training DVDs. It is one of my favorite tools because (it) has so many uses.”

Of working in visual effects and production, Davis said it’s difficult to pick one favorite on-the-job experience, but in the spirit of the season he did confess, “The Nightmare Before Christmas was the most fun I have ever had on a film. The crew felt more like family than co-workers and it was my first feature film… (also) working on the Star Wars series was a childhood dream come true and frankly, kind of surreal. I grew up a big fan of the original series and that shaped the career path I chose.”

Projects ‘Made by Moto-Saw™’

We asked some of our favorite DIY and craft bloggers to create projects using the Dremel Moto-Saw. This week, we’re featuring Becca Dulgarian’s highly impressive Giant Bus Wall Art! Becca found the Moto-Saw super easy to work with and loved that the tool can convert from a stationary scroll saw to a handheld portable coping saw with the touch of a button.

For a step-by-step project tutorial, head over to Becca’s blog, Blue Cricket Design. For more project inspiration, visit the Dremel Moto-Saw Book of Inspiration.
