DremelMade Maritime Artwork

“Merry” times are his specialty. For more than 25 years, Frank Ryczek of Jacksonville, Fla. has been adding lively decorations to northern Florida pub and restaurant walls with his custom-made maritime artwork.

Ryczek considers himself a self-taught “power” woodcarver, using only Dremel tools for carving and never the knife, chisel or mallet he watched his father use.

“Dremel tools are much faster and safer than the old mallet and chisel route,” said Ryczek. “I still have a scar from when I tried to carve a fish tail the old way like my dad did, but instead ended up with the tail gouged through my left hand.”

Ryczek first started carving as a hobby, but has now built a business around it. Through Maritime Artworks Ltd., he’s created artwork for nautical Florida establishments such as Cedar River Seafood, The Blue Anchor Pub, Boathouse Subs and St. Johns Seafood and Steaks.

In addition to wall hangings, he also carves ship models and maritime miniatures and is involved in his local Pirate’s FLAG Modeler’s Club.

He predominantly uses a Dremel 400 Series XPR rotary tool or Dremel Variable Speed MultiPro rotary tool with a multitude of bits and attachments, including the 225-01 Flex Shaft. attachment. Ryczek also finds the Dremel VersaTip™ Multipurpose Tool Kit, Dremel Sanding Contours and a Dremel scroll saw helpful for his work.

“I love the versatility of Dremel tools,” Ryczek said. “I can do every step of my multi-step projects with my Dremel tools, including sanding, drilling, cutting and carving. They are essential for what I do and serve as an extension of my right arm!”

Ryczek encourages anyone interested in learning more about his work to get in touch.
Featured Product – Dremel 10.8 Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Rotary Tool

The Dremel 10.8 Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless rotary tool is ideal for people who prefer not to restrict themselves to a workroom. For projects such as crafts, restoring antiques, working on a car or sharpening a chainsaw or lawnmower blade, the Dremel 10.8 Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless travels wherever the user needs to work.

The first cordless tool in North America to feature a lithium-ion battery, it holds a charge up to six times longer than tools with standard nickel-cadium batteries, allowing do-it-yourselfers and hobbyists to complete more projects on a single charge. Last year, Dremel added a power boost to the tool by adding 25 percent more run time to the battery pack. Additional features include a soft grip handle and a power switch/variable speed control dial.

The tool retails for $69.99 in a kit that includes 40 genuine Dremel accessories, a charger and a molded carrying case. It can be found at most hardware stores and home improvement centers nationwide.
Expert Advice – Grinding and Sharpening

Whether sharpening a lawn mower blade, removing rust from a bicycle rim or smoothing a rough piece of glass, Dremel’s grinding and sharpening accessories offer many practical, do-it-yourself applications. They accomplish money-saving tasks, such as deburring, smoothing, grinding and cleaning a variety of materials around the home and yard.

500 Aluminum oxide abrasive wheel
This wheel is made of a high-quality industrial abrasive made for extended general purpose grinding on metals, castings, welded joints, rivets and rust. It works best for cleaning and rust removal as well as light polishing.

541 Aluminum oxide grinding wheel
This grinding wheel is ideal for shaping, smoothing, sharpening, deburring, rust removal and general purpose grinding on most materials, including stainless steel. Use the 415 Dressing Stone to clean the wheel or modify its shape.

Aluminum oxide grinding stones
The red/brown stones are most commonly used for sharpening, deburring and general purpose grinding on materials including metals, castings, welded joints and rust.

Silicon carbide grinding stones
These blue/green stones can grind brittle materials like glass, stone, ceramics and porcelain. A silicon carbide grinding stone is ideal for smoothing a rough edge on a drinking glass or outlining a pattern to use for engraving glass.

Chain saw sharpening stones
These long, thin sharpening stones are designed to sharpen chain saw blades quickly and easily using a light touch.

Aluminum oxide abrasive points
Abrasive points are ideal for finish and detail work and removing the top layer of a surface without removing any base material. They will also remove rust or paint and are particularly useful when preparing a metal surface to be painted.
