Dremel Experts Share Tips for Creating Priceless Holiday Presents

Most people will agree that the best presents are those that come from the heart. With a little time, your trusted Dremel tools and some skilled advice from the Dremel Experts, you can turn a ho-hum gift into a creative, personalized present that will have your loved ones cheering this holiday season.

Put your artistic vision to use by turning a simple, fragrant candle into an eye-catching decoration. For this project, you will need a plain candle, a No. 2 pencil, a piece of paper, a foam brush, candle paint in your favorite color, a Dremel rotary tool and a 107 Engraving Cutter. Once your supplies are in order, follow these tips from the Dremel Experts:
  • Cut a piece of paper to match the height and diameter of your candle. On one side, draw or trace the design you’d like to engrave on your candle. Shade the other side completely with pencil lead.
  • Wrap the stencil around the candle with the design facing outward until both ends of the stencil meet, then place tape at the top and bottom of the joining section of the stencil.
  • Use a No. 2 pencil to firmly trace all line art on the stencil. Applying pressure will transfer the design onto your candle. Remove the stencil when finished.
  • Carve over the transferred stencil design on the candle using a Dremel rotary tool with the No. 107 Engraving Cutter. Use a steady, continuous motion during your carving process.
  • After carving is finished, apply a small amount of paint to the beveled section of your foam brush. Move in an upward direction along the length of the candle until you achieve a desired texture. Continue this process until you have covered the entire candle.
To commemorate the holiday season, make a festive glass ornament to hang from a Christmas tree, holiday garland or in a windowpane. All you need is a flat glass ornament that you can purchase from your local craft store (in any size and shape you like), a Dremel rotary tool and an assortment of Dremel cutting accessories. If you prefer, use the 225 Flex Shaft attachment to remove the weight of the tool from your hand and allow for precise and delicate movements. The Dremel Experts share these tips for etching:
  • Find an image to be transferred to the glass, then secure your glass pane over the image using masking tape.
  • Use a Dremel rotary tool on low and medium speeds (Dremel Experts recommend 25,000 rpm) to carefully trace the image located underneath the glass with small strokes.
  • When etching glass, remember that the diamond points will provide the finest line, the silicone carbide stones will provide the thickest line and the tungsten carbide lines will provide the deepest line.
You can also carve designs on the outer edges of your glass piece to create a candle base and combine two presents into one. For more Dremel projects, visit www.dremel.com.

Ask The Experts

Question:
We have company coming over for a holiday get-together next month. Do you have any suggestions for quick ways we can spruce up our home and clear away clutter in the next few weeks?
   ~Al and Dee H., via e-mail

Answer:
One of the quickest ways to make messes disappear from out in the open is to store necessities behind closed doors. To create more storage space inside your closets, install shelves. You’ll be surprised how much extra room you’ll have for storage! Coated wire shelving kits can be easily custom-fit to your exact closet dimensions. Begin by measuring the width of your closet space and mark the measurement directly onto the shelf. Secure the shelf to your work area to prevent movement and use a rotary tool with a cut-off wheel, such as EZ456 EZ Lock 1-1/2-Inch Cut-off Wheel, to make your cuts. Depending on the amount of shelving you need to cut, you may use more than one wheel. Luckily, wheel changes are quick and easy with the EZ Lock System. Next, smooth new edges with the 932 Aluminum Oxide Grinding Stone, or a coarse band and drum sander accessory, such as the 407 ½-Inch Sanding Drum, then finish by securing the shelves to your wall using a Dremel Driver.
